Maulin Mountain Loop

Last verified May 2026 · Trail open

A strenuous 7 km loop to the rocky summit of Maulin (570 m) — a quieter alternative to nearby Djouce, with views over Powerscourt Waterfall, the Sugar Loaf, and the Wicklow coast. Allow 3 hours. Mountain gear and reasonable fitness required. Steep in sections, especially the final climb to the summit cairn.

Route & directions

How to walk it

Start at Crone Wood car park, signposted from the R760 north of Enniskerry. Follow the Wicklow Way trail south for about 1 km, then turn east onto the Maulin path. The climb to the summit takes about an hour through forest and onto open mountainside. The summit cairn is rocky — care needed in wind. Descend by the same path, or continue south via War Hill for a longer day. Allow 3 hours for the basic loop.

Local tips

  • Crone Wood car park fills early on weekends in summer
  • Waterproof boots — the upper path is boggy after rain
  • Care on the summit rocks in strong wind
  • Combine with Powerscourt Waterfall (separate paid entry) for a full day
  • Johnnie Fox's pub in Glencullen is the post-walk option of choice
