Why you'll like it

Highlights of this walk

  • Follows the Avonmore river through the Vale of Clara — one of Ireland's best-preserved native oak woodlands
  • Quieter than the Wicklow Way and just as scenic
  • Connects two real Wicklow towns: Rathdrum (Parnell country) and Laragh (the gateway to Glendalough)
  • Bluebells in May, salmon in the river in autumn, kingfishers all year
  • Endpoint at Laragh puts you within walking distance of the Glendalough monastic city
Route & directions

How to walk it

Start at Rathdrum railway station — the Dublin–Rosslare DART line drops you here. The trail begins on the lane behind the station and follows the Avonmore river upstream through woodland. After about 5 km you enter the Vale of Clara Nature Reserve, an ancient oak wood protected for over a hundred years. The path crosses the river twice on footbridges. The final 2 km climbs steadily out of the valley and into Laragh village. Allow 4.5 hours at a steady pace.

Local tips

  • Plan transport home — the 65 bus links Laragh to Rathdrum but runs only a few times a day
  • Waterproof boots essential — riverside sections are muddy year-round
  • Avoid after heavy rain — some river crossings flood
  • Pack lunch — there's no food between Rathdrum and Laragh
  • Combine with Glendalough at the Laragh end for a full day
