What to pack for the Wicklow Way — a realistic 2026 list
Most packing lists for the Wicklow Way are written by people who haven't walked it since 2008. This is ours — specific, ruthless, and based on what actually ends up in the wash on day four.
The non-negotiables
Proper walking boots (not trainers — the boardwalk sections are slippery and the bog is real). Waterproof jacket with a hood. Waterproof trousers (Ireland). Hat. Gloves even in July. Two pairs of walking socks; wool, not cotton.
Pack choices
Forty-litre rucksack if you're self-carrying full kit. Twenty-five-litre day-pack if you're using a bag-transfer service between B&Bs. Waterproof pack liner — not just a rain cover.
Navigation
Phone with the full route pre-downloaded in Komoot or OS Maps (offline). Paper backup of the Sport Ireland map. Compass you know how to use. Whistle, headtorch, spare batteries.
The blister kit
Compeed plasters, duct tape (cut into strips in advance), zinc-oxide tape, ibuprofen, sterile gauze. Blisters end Wicklow Way attempts more often than weather does.
Food & water
Two-litre water bladder plus a backup bottle. High-energy snacks: cereal bars, trail mix, one emergency bar per day untouched. Most stages have no lunch stop — pack a lunch every morning.
Evenings
Clean t-shirt and underwear per night. Fleece. Dry footwear (Crocs or similar) for the pub. Phone charger. Small hand-towel even if the B&B provides one.
The things you forget
Nail clippers (trim your toenails the night before the walk — serious advice). Sunscreen (Irish sun burns). Midge repellent from May to September. Small bin bag for wet gear.
