How the day unfolds

  • Steady climb out of Moyne through Ballyteige Forest. Broad forest road; save your legs.
  • Emerge onto open moorland above Aghavannagh. Navigation matters here in mist.
  • Along the shoulder of Slievemaan (756 m). First view north into Glenmalure — 40-kilometre-long glacial valley, the longest in Ireland or Britain.
  • Dramatic descent: switchbacks drop almost 400 m over three kilometres. Tough on tired knees.
  • Finish at the Glenmalure Lodge — walker's inn serving food and pints since the 1800s. Hot bath, early dinner, sleep.
  • Safety note: if cloud drops below 500 m, take the forestry road alternative signed on the waymarkers.
