The plan

Day 1 — Friday afternoon: the Railway Walk

  • Arrive Tinahely late afternoon. Check in at Madeline's Accommodation — self-service keypad entry means you don't have to wrestle sleeping toddlers through a reception check-in.
  • Late-afternoon stroll on the Railway Walk — flat, buggy-safe, bluebells in spring, blackberries in autumn.
  • Dinner at Hanlon's in Tinahely — kids welcome, portions generous.

Day 2 — Saturday: Avondale & Meeting of the Waters

  • Morning: drive to Avondale Forest Park, half an hour from Tinahely. The new Beyond the Trees treetop walk is a family highlight. Entry €14.50 adult, children from €9.50.
  • Lunch at the Avondale café (dog-friendly outside).
  • Afternoon: drive 15 minutes to the Meeting of the Waters at Avoca. Short walk, picnic area, Thomas Moore song memorial.
  • Ice-cream detour at Avoca Handweavers café in Avoca village.
  • Dinner back at Tinahely, or try Fitzgerald's of Avoca on the way home.

Day 3 — Sunday: Powerscourt or Clara Lara

  • Weather-dependent. Good day: Powerscourt Gardens. The Pet Cemetery, Japanese Garden and Pepperpot Tower all play well with children.
  • Wet day: Clara Lara Funpark near Rathdrum — water slides, pedaloes, adventure playgrounds. Open May–August.
  • Lunch at the Powerscourt café or Clara Lara's on-site catering.
  • Afternoon: home. Stop at Johnnie Fox's pub in Glencullen on the way for dinner if you're driving back to Dublin — the hooley is family-friendly until 6pm.
