How far is the Wicklow Way really? A stage-by-stage reality check

The Wicklow Way is "132 km" — until you try to walk it. Between reroutes, optional side-trips and the dreaded official-GPX-vs-your-watch discrepancy, actual mileage varies. Here's the honest breakdown.

The headline figure

Wicklowway.com and Sport Ireland publish the route as 132 km. Most GPS watches will tell you it's between 128 km and 138 km depending on track smoothing, signal loss in forest, and whether you wandered off for a view.

Stage 1 (Clonegal → Shillelagh): officially 14 km, GPS 14.2 km

Accurate. Opening stage with gentle gradients and few distractions.

Stage 2 (Shillelagh → Tinahely): officially 18 km, GPS 18.5 km

Close to spec. The old Coollattin estate wall detour adds 0.2 km if you take it.

Stage 3 (Tinahely → Moyne): officially 17 km, GPS 17.8 km

Most walkers clock slightly over on this one because of a short exposed section where route-finding slows you.

Stage 4 (Moyne → Glenmalure): officially 22 km, GPS 22–24 km

The big variable. Poor weather on Slievemaan forces the forestry-road alternative, adding 1.5 km. Our recommended allowance: 24 km.

Stage 5 (Glenmalure → Glendalough): officially 14 km, GPS 13.8 km

Slightly under-called if anything. The descent through the Spinc boardwalk is the shortest-feeling 14 km on the Way.

Stage 6 (Glendalough → Roundwood): officially 17 km, GPS 17.5 km

The detour around Lough Dan varies depending on ground conditions. 18 km in wet seasons.

Stage 7 (Roundwood → Knockree): officially 19 km, GPS 20 km if you bag Djouce

The Djouce summit detour adds 1.2 km and 150 m of climb. Worth it.

Stage 8 (Knockree → Marlay): officially 20 km, GPS 19.5 km

Close to spec. The finish in the Dublin suburbs feels longer than it is.

Total: 132 km → 143 km

If you walk every optional summit, take every scenic detour, and miss one waymarker per day (everyone does), you'll clock 143 km. Plan for that, not 132.
