Overnight in Tinahely, not Moyne
The official Wicklow Way ends Stage 5 in Moyne — a quiet rural crossroads with no shop, no food and no accommodation. For walkers who'd rather sleep somewhere with full facilities, we suggest a short 2 km variant that ends Stage 5 in Tinahely village instead, then rejoins the official Way for Stage 6. This is our recommendation — not the official routing. Both are mapped and downloadable below.
Official routing vs WalkWicklow variant
| Official Way | WalkWicklow variant | |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 5 ends | Moyne | Tinahely village |
| Stage 6 starts | Moyne | Tinahely (rejoins Way at the R747) |
| Stage 5 distance | 21 km | ~22 km (+2 km to the village) |
| Stage 6 distance | 21 km | ~13 km (rejoins the Way) |
| Facilities at stage end | None at Moyne | Shop · ATM · food · pubs · beds |
| Total trail length | 127 km | ~127 km (essentially unchanged) |
Variant distances are approximate and being finalised against a Tinahely-routed GPX. Stages 1–4 and Stage 7 are identical in both routings.
Moyne has no facilities. Tinahely has everything.
Moyne is a tiny Georgian crossroads hamlet — handsome, but with no shop, no food, and no accommodation on the trail. After a 21 km mountain stage, that's a hard place to end the day.
Tinahely, two kilometres on, is a proper south Wicklow market town: a supermarket, ATM, post office, a restaurant and coffee shop, three pubs (including Seaver's), the Old Courthouse Arts Centre, and Madeline's Accommodation right on the Square. It's the natural overnight stop for the southern half of the Way.
Madeline's Accommodation — on Tinahely Square
A WalkWicklow Premium Partner, two minutes off the trail via Mangan's Lane. Self-service coded entry, walker-friendly, right on the Square. The recommended Stage 5 overnight on our variant.

If you're matching your walk to the official wicklowway.com map and waymark posts, follow the official routing through Moyne — it's the National Trails Office route and we keep it in full on the Stage 5 and Stage 6 pages, with the official GPX downloads intact. The variant is an option, never a replacement.
Both routings, both downloadable
The official Stage 5 and Stage 6 GPX files are below. A dedicated Tinahely-variant GPX (with the R747 diversion to the village) is being finalised and will be added here.
