The plan

Day 1 — Arrive, Devil's Glen at dusk

  • Arrive Ashford mid-afternoon. Check in at your accommodation (we'll suggest a quiet B&B — not a resort).
  • Late afternoon at the Devil's Glen forest trails — a gorge walk with a waterfall at the end, rarely crowded after 5pm.
  • Dinner at home or a quiet pub. No TV. Book is fine.

Day 2 — Dawn at Lough Tay, day at Mount Usher

  • Up at 5am (yes). Drive to the Lough Tay viewpoint. Walk in before sunrise. Watch the light arrive. Twenty minutes of silence. This alone is worth the trip.
  • Back for breakfast at your accommodation.
  • Morning: Mount Usher Gardens — 20 acres of Robinsonian planting on the Vartry River. Arrive at opening (10am) to beat the tour buses. Allow 2 hours.
  • Lunch at the gardens' café.
  • Afternoon: Vale of Clara woodland walk, or just sit somewhere with tea.
  • Evening: quiet dinner. Early bed.

Day 3 — Avondale Forest & home

  • Morning at Avondale Forest Park. The forest loop (avoid the Beyond the Trees treetop walk on Sundays — it's the busiest thing in the county).
  • Lunch at the café.
  • Drive home slowly.
