St Kevin's Way

Last verified May 2026 · Trail open

The ancient pilgrim route to Glendalough — a 30 km waymarked trail from the village of Hollywood in west Wicklow over the Wicklow Gap to the monastic city. Pilgrims have walked this path since the 6th century, when St Kevin's reputation drew thousands across these mountains. Allow 8–10 hours, or split into two days with an overnight at Ballinagee. Strong walkers only; mountain gear required for the high section.

⚠️ Distances and grades are cross-checked — always carry an OS map on mountain routes.

Route & directions

How to walk it

Start in Hollywood village, west Wicklow — accessible by car or the 65 bus from Dublin. The waymarked trail is signposted with the saint's-staff symbol. The first 12 km cross farmland and forestry from Hollywood to Ballyknockan. The middle 8 km climb over the Wicklow Gap on the old military road — the highest and most exposed section, often boggy. The final 10 km descend through Glendasan into Glendalough. The route is all on tracks and forest roads; no scrambling. Allow 8–10 hours for one-day walkers, or split into two days with an overnight in Ballinagee or Laragh.

Local tips

  • Two-day plan: stay overnight at the Old Mill Cottage in Ballinagee or back in Hollywood
  • Carry water — there are no shops between Hollywood and Laragh
  • The Wicklow Gap section is exposed; full waterproofs essential
  • Map: OSi Discovery Series 56 covers the route end-to-end
  • Glendalough Hotel and the Wicklow Heather restaurant are the natural endpoints — book ahead
