Mangan's Loop is a 9.2 km waymarked hill walk above Tinahely village in south Wicklow. Forest trail, mountain trails and country lanes climbing 360 m to a high point of 390 m, with views across the Derry Valley. Allow 4.5 hours. Suitable for reasonably fit walkers. Access only via School Road and Mangan's Lane — there is no access from the Railway Walk or Garryhoe Lane.

How to walk it

Park in Tinahely village. Access to the loop is only via School Road and Mangan's Lane — there is no access via the Railway Walk (Togher) or Garryhoe Lane. From the Railway Walk Carpark, walk 1 km along School Road to Mangan's Lane to join the trail. From there, the Mangan's Loop (green arrows) is a 9.2 km moderate looped walk combining forestry roads, open hillside tracks and quiet country lanes, climbing over Garryhoe Hill to viewpoints overlooking the Derry Valley before descending towards Tinahely. Allow 4.5 hours. Mixed terrain — gravel forestry tracks, grassy mountain sections and minor roads. Some parts can become muddy after wet weather. Total ascent around 360 m; highest point 390 m.

  • Walking boots recommended, particularly after rain
  • Bring water — no facilities along the route
  • Higher sections feel exposed in windy or wet conditions
  • Phone coverage may be inconsistent
  • Foxgloves, gorse and roadside wildflowers in late spring and summer
  • Watch for birds of prey and other upland birdlife
