Lough Bray Loop

New page · facts verified June 2026 · GPX to follow

Lough Bray is two corrie lakes — Upper and Lower — sitting in deep hollows scooped from the granite beneath Kippure, right on the R115 Military Road. The 6.8 km loop climbs above the dark Upper lake past the Eagle's Crag for the classic view into the corrie, then circles back. Open mountain, no waymarks, boggy in places — but short and hugely scenic.

Route & directions

How to walk it

Start from the parking area on the R115 Military Road above Lough Bray Upper, between Glencree and Sally Gap.

From the roadside the route climbs onto the open ground above Lough Bray Upper, following the rim of the corrie past the Eagle's Crag — the cliff that gives the lake its brooding look. The path is informal and boggy in stretches, so boots are essential. Higher up you get the views north to Kippure with its TV mast and out over the Dublin Mountains. The loop drops back towards Lough Bray Lower and the old lodge before returning along the Military Road to the start. Allow about two and a half hours. There are no waymarks — bring a map and don't go up in low cloud.

Local tips

  • Waterproof boots — the ground around the lakes is wet and boggy
  • Parking is a small lay-by on the R115 — arrive early at weekends
  • No waymarks or facilities — carry water and a map
  • The cliffs above the lake are steep; keep well back from the edge
  • Combine with the Military Road drive for a great half-day from Enniskerry
