Iron Bridge to Tinahely

New page · facts verified June 2026 · GPX to follow

This is the long south-Wicklow stretch of the Wicklow Way — about 20 km point-to-point from the Iron Bridge over the Ow River at Aghavannagh, down through Moyne and the green roads of the south-west, to finish near Tinahely. It's a big day, but much of it is on quiet roads, old green roads and boreens rather than rough mountain, and it's waymarked throughout with the yellow walking man. Tinahely itself sits about 2 km off the Way — a short detour to a proper bed.

Route & directions

How to walk it

Start at the Iron Bridge in the Ow valley at Aghavannagh — the lowest point on this part of the Wicklow Way — and follow the yellow waymarks south.

From the bridge the trail climbs gradually across Ballyteigue Bridge and threads between Ballygobban Mountain and Sheilstown Hill before a quiet road walk down to the small Georgian hamlet of Moyne. Moyne has little in the way of facilities, so most walkers carry food. From Moyne the Way follows leafy green roads around Muskeagh Hill, on through Mullinacuff towards the Stranakelly crossroads. Tinahely lies about 2 km off the waymarked line — a short detour into the town, and the obvious place to stop for the night. It's a long day at around 20 km with a fair bit of cumulative climbing, but the surfaces are forgiving and the waymarking is reliable. Madeline's on Tinahely Square is the natural base for walkers doing this stretch.
