Route & directions

How to walk it

Start at the Lower Lake car park beside the Visitor Centre. The Green Road is signposted with green arrows. The path runs along the southern shore of the Lower Lake on a wide boardwalk and gravel track, loops past the Reefert Church ruins at the head of the lake, and returns through the woodland on the northern side, passing the monastic city. Allow 45 minutes for the full circuit. The Visitor Centre at the start has toilets, a café and a small museum.

Local tips

  • Park at the main Visitor Centre car park (paid) — the Upper Lake car park is further on
  • Buggy-friendly throughout; one short uneven section near the Reefert ruins
  • Combine with the round tower and monastic city — interpretation panels along the route
  • Glendalough is busy on weekends and through the summer — arrive before 10am
  • The Brockagh Centre in Laragh is a good lunch alternative if the Glendalough Hotel is full
